Hurt People Hurt People

Hurt people hurt people - George Wilborn

Today I was listening to The Michael Baisden Show on the radio this afternoon.  They were praising Trayvon Martin's mother and father for being united for their child's sake.  They had a discussion about divorced parents doing all kinds of things to hurt their former spouse, usually with a sometimes blatant disregard for their child(ren)'s feelings.  George said something very poignant with the above quote.

It really made me think about people and how they act sometimes.  Why do people who are hurting tend to be the most hurtful?  It's pretty simple really.  It goes back to that old quote that misery loves company.  I've been friends with hurtful people, and they pretty much had a rough life.  And I do empathize with them, I really do.  However being hurt by people does not give people the right to hurt others.  I understand that life can be difficult, but you would think that that difficult life would be all you need to try to avoid others having that same life.  However, nine times out of ten, the ones that hurt you the most are the ones that have been hurt before.

I've always questioned why I have been hurtful in the past.  Most of the time, it's because I had a rough day or week.  It's not a fair thing for me to do.  You're supposed to leave the past behind you.  I know I'm asking a lot of people, to disregard what has happened to them.  However, there's a better solution.  Instead of repeating history by spreading your hurt to others, why not spread love?  Why not try to bring peace and joy to those around you?  Where does the rule book say that those who have been hurting get to hurt others?  Give people a chance to want to love you.  I've witnessed people being hurt firsthand by those that claimed to love them the most.  I've been the victim of those who have been hurt by others.  It upset me.  Still does, quite honestly.  Let's bring love back.  Instead of spreading the hurt that brought you down, spread the love that lifts people up.

Hurt people hurt people.
